I'm so cruel.

Introducing Dr. Ariana Andonuts, a scientist.
I hate making relatives for canon characters. They've already got enough trouble with their own family, why suddenly add a long-lost brother/sister/mom/dad/great-aunt's mother's sister's co-worker? Jeff's background makes me wonder though. What happened between him and his Dad to dunk him in a boarding school and forget him 10 years of his life? Clearly something to do with a mom in the mix. Or a lack of one. :o
In the beginning, a woman studying biology hears of the famed scientist making a name across the world. She visits him in his dormitory, and sure enough, after watching him work, they fall in love and get married. Their relationship gets rocky, and Dr. Andonuts's wife is often frustrated with his blunt gossip and absentmindedness, but overall the two scientists lived happily, studying in his self-built laboratory in a gorgeous glen. Ariana later gave birth to a beautiful baby with golden hair--the Jeff Andonuts we know and love today.
But their happiness wouldn't last. Something berserk happens, and it was up to Dr. Andonuts to test an invention known as the Phase Distorter to fix rips in the dimension/space continuum before it rips theirs to shreds into nonexistance. Concerned for Jeff's future, Ariana volunteers despite her husband's protests. Promising to fetch her back, he transfers her soul into a stopwatch, and sends her through the Time Distorter. The dimensions are fixed, and through much tribulation, Dr. Andonuts was able to find Ariana. But his wife is forever bound to the watch--she would never come back to her human body again.
Knowing it was impossible for him to raise Jeff among his studies, Ariana instructs Dr. Andonuts to take him to the most prestigious boarding school, where he would have a sufficient education and be safe. He phones Maxwell Labs, a recent friend and a new instructor at Snow Wood, who agrees to take Jeff to Winters. This would be the last time Dr. Andonuts would see his son--a wee baby at the time. He guarded Ariana, wearing her around his neck as he performed experiments and studies. That too went wrong--a fire erupted at the workplace. In utter panic, Dr. Andonuts leaves Ariana behind--by the time he realized what he'd done, it was too late to go back, the building clouded by fire and suffocating smoke. ("Sir... it's a watch." "MY WIFE IS IN THERE!") Since the accident, Dr. Andonuts fell into grief, isolating himself and never having another human coworker again. Since then, he has lived in Winters, conducting and absorbing himself to experiments and inventions. So engrossed in his work, he forgot he even had a wife and son, proceeding to live like he had always been single. Until one fateful day, when a boy stepped in his lab and bore a striking resemblance to someone he couldn't put his finger on...
In a spooky, forgotten glen, Ness and his friends approached a blackened building that hadn't been touched in decades. In hopes of finding crucial information on dimension travel, they search the haunted premise for books on the subject that hadn't been burnt in the fire. Alas, the Chosen Four reach a deadend, finding nothing they have come for. Jeff rests his hand over a shelf--a shrill scream shakes the room, begging whoever lain hands should NOT wind her back, thankyouverymuch--the Chosen Four gather around the talking stopwatch, preparing themselves for attack. But the watch didn't want battles--it wanted answers. From the very boy who woke her up.
"Why did you pick me up!?"
"I-I didn't mean--! I-It was an accident I--!"
"What's your name?"
"I--What!?"
"WHAT is your name? Tell me your name!"
"J-Jeff!"
"...Jeff WHAT!?"
"Andonuts! P-Please... Jeff Andonuts. Jeff Andonuts!"
"... ... Oh god... who was your father?"
"Nn, Dr. Andonuts. Is something--?"
"Oh god... oh god oh god..."
Needless to say, the reunion was awkward. But the Chosen Four take Ariana into their possession, leaving the abandoned lab just before it collapsed to ash. From saving information when they couldn't reach a pay-phone to motherly nagging Jeff (ex. yelling at him for staying up all night on inventions), they eventually reach Dr. Andonuts's lab again, where Jeff holds Ariana up to her husband--needless to say, despite her overbearing scariness, he was rather pleased to see his mom chew out Dr. Andonuts.
The rest is spoilers. :P Not much is known about Ariana's personality yet, except she's pretty loud and tempermental (it could be where Jeff got his recklessness from), but if you get past that, she cares deep down and loves loves loves her son--to the point where she'd sacrifice anything, including her body. It gets complicated, so to say.
Nom nom. I need dinner. It's late. :o

Date: 2007-11-11 07:07 am (UTC)Free association time: I've always found the relative inattention from the fandom about Jeff's mom a little confusing, especially given that the fandom is really accepting of OCs and canon-characters-as-OCs (see: approximately every Picky-centric fic in existence). The hanging question "how precisely did Dr. Andonuts manage to have a son at all, given his entire personality?" begs for fanfic explanations. (I'll admit that I've come up with three separate visions of Jeff's mom, each of which will probably get its own fic eventually. Hooray AUs.)

Date: 2007-11-11 06:27 pm (UTC)I found a fanfiction directory, and it mentioned a few theories, like Jeff feeling guilty over his parent's divorce, Jeff's Mom being famous for a profession I forgotten... that's about it though. You do have to wonder how Dr. Andonuts got a kid though. XDDD!
(Ooh, three? Fun! I'd like to hear about 'em. :o)
