fannish5!
Name five stories that aren't a type you normally like (because of characters, pairing, topic, etc.) that you really enjoyed.
Love Triangles
I hate hate hate hate hate love triangles. Not only is there unnessesary drama, it's predictable as all hell (c'mon, you know the main girl's gonna end up with the main guy anyway!), you always feel sorry for the loser (who most likely deserved the girl more), it brings out petty jealousy and the worst of all parties, and it follows the same basic plotline: Two boys want girl. Girl is oblivious. Girl stands around looking pretty while boys pull each other's hair out. Girl picks Boy 1 whose a cocky asshole. Boy 2 the Sweetheart accepts them together and goes to Rejected Loserville, where he either A. Lives without love and dies of a broken heart. B. Lives without love and has a sucky menial job like being a school janitor or something. C. Gets pity from the author and gets paired up with some leftover gal despite the two of them having no chemistry whatsoever, or some new chick where though they live Happily Ever After, their relationship to us is boring and empty. What, our sole purpose is to applaud that Guy 2 finally gets some? Frankly, love quadruples, love webs, whatever you call them frustrate and bore me. XD
One triangle, however, is intense as all hell.
1. The Phantom of the Opera. Erik likes Christine likes Erik & Raoul likes Christine.
This is a spooky story here. Not only does Christine have to pick between two men (Angel of Music vs. Childhood Friend), she's placing the fate (heck, lives) of herself, Raoul, Erik and the Opera House in her hands, as Erik creeps about crashing the chandelier over people's heads to noosing folks onstage.
Christine's father died, which stuck her in a stage of grief for years (no pun intended). She believed in fairy-tales--her father told her that one day, should he pass away, he would send the Angel of Music to come to see her. Come he did! He consoled her at her time of need, teaching her to sing and refine her skills. All her life, Christine never saw the Angel--until Erik led her to his lair, and she accidently pulled his mask off. She saw not an Angel or a Phantom, but a Man--but because she witnessed the horror of his disfigured face, she was doomed to belong to him for eternity--Christine would never escape the voices inside her head.
Meet Raoul de Chagny. Long ago, back when Christine's father was still alive, he and Christine were the best of friends. One day, while they were out at the beach, Christine's red scarf blown away, and Raoul jumped right into the water and swam to get it back. Years went by before they saw each other again. Then one day, her childhood sweetheart returned and saw her perform her greatest yet...
So who got Christine? The lonely but sadistic Erik or the kindhearted Raoul that'd give anything for her? In the novel, Christine had to pick between a Grasshopper and a Scorpion. Depending what she chose, she'd stay with Erik for eternity and Raoul would be unharmed, OR she would end up blowing up the Opera House. For Raoul's (and everyone else's) safety, she took the Scorpion. She tearfully kisses Erik--who was so moved by her kindness that he sets her and Raoul free, giving up his own happiness so that Christine would be happy. In other words, Erik matured--he learned what love really was (rather than selfishly caging her and killing everyone who looks at her despite her own feelings) and became a better person, even though his life came to a grim end.
Okay, that last bit was probably worded poorly. But you know what I mean right? It's about substance. :o
2. Fanficwise? ImagineGal's Cycle. (Ness/Paula/Jeff) I've rambled enough on PotO, so I'll make this brief. Really. XDDD! I don't think I ever sat at the edge of my seat with my arms all tense like that from a triangle before. ("Oh yeah. Real wise, Ness. Blowing him off like that. XD" "Don't do it, Jeff! Don't do iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!" "JEFF! ZOMG IF YOU DO THAT I'M GOING TO FUCKING KILL YOU JKAGHTJKHSGJHKHNGHR ah good, you didn't. My respect for you hasn't lost then. You're still my favorite character. Good. I don't have to hate you. *takes deep breaths* I'm fiiiiiiiiiiiiiine..." "Oh god Ness, you asshole. XD") Then the ending... aaaaaaaaaaaaah! T_____________________________________T (This is my favorite line: MAKES ME FUCKING WIBBLE EVERYTIME. I swear everyime I read it, it guts me... oh yeah, highlight for spoilers: Paula knew what she had to do. There were only seconds before the last feather disappeared into the horizon.
Slowly, she leaned down.
And kissed a dead man.
*BAWL* T_______________________T "Losing the Feather" indeed. *goes off and sobs like a crocodile gone emo* Doesn't help they named their kid after him either... *WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH CRYZ MOAR*
Rape
Now, I don't mean stuff like "YOU GONNA GET RAEPED". That kinda thing is hilareous and great for injokes. XDDD! And Puri likes a little noncon now and then (Mmm, Mephadow. X3333). I mean serious rape--I mean sure, I can handle it in mentions like Fushigi Yuugi and Yami no Matsuei, but real indepth graphic rape makes me squeamish. Especially reading about it or watching it. Makes me feel violated and uncomfortable, you know?
3. I will make one exception: Seclusion by Aujang Abadi. (Final Fantasy IV)
I think I remember this being one of the earliest great stories I ever read. I think I was around 12-14 when I first read it, and I was a sensitive reader--the violence was explicit (though not necessarily graphic--it's just visceral) sure, I could handle that. But when little ol' Puri read about her favorite character erm... "confronting" Rosa in the second chapter, I cringed in my seat and felt chilly and pale. What made it creepier was that it worked. I see this as an actual event in the game. Then there's the path to redemption and all blah blah I won't spoil but Chapter 10 I thought I had a bowling bowl chucked at my stomach. I can't find any words to explain how amazing this fic is so... go go go! This is one of the fics that changed me as a writer--I'd kill to characterize as well as Abadi, and Kain is made of flesh and bone and flaws and... human.
4. If you want something pitch-black though, here's some darkfic for ya: Sad Mudokon's Golden Saffron or Institution Green?
Be warned though, it's Mariofic (starring Shy Guys and Snifits nonetheless), so if that makes you uneasy, don't read. Hell, this fic will make you uneasy anyway. XD Not to mention the mindfuck that sets in your brain at the end. DDDD: But like a trainwreck, I just keep coming back... DAMN YOU SAD MUDOKON. Her writing is always like that. T__________T *sob*
Non-OTPs
5. I don't generally care for Knuxamy. Doesn't do anything for me. But Sipp shown me Stitches by keem(and I'll have to resist the urge to think of Orgy) and it's really dang adorable. I love how she characterized Amy and Knuckles in this, and Knux is just too dang cute. :3 Not to mention the way Amy teases him, I love little things like that. <3333 Nice to have something fluffy and cute after all the scary stuff I've shown you, eh? XDDD!

Date: 2007-09-29 04:52 am (UTC)You know, I actually kind of like love triangles--
-bricked- @_x
And I has no OTPs. XD ...well...except one, but it's a secret, soyoucan'tknow. Also: must go through and read those stories you mentioned. ....except PotO. Because I'm still recovering my overexposure to that. >>
But luffing on you anyway. :3
no subject
Date: 2007-09-29 10:46 pm (UTC)Eh, I use the term "OTP" pretty loosely. I know it means "my favorite all-time pairing that I can't see the characters with anyone else" but I have so many favorite ships that pair the same person: (Ex. Sonic/Shadow, Mephiles/Shadow, Omega/Shadow... I ship Shadow with almost everybody! XDDDDDD!) And waaaaah! Have fun! Don't worry about the PotO bit. There was a LOT of hype back when the movie came out, so I kinda moved around quietly. And I read the book which has some exclusive material. ;D Like the Persian. Mmm, he was kickass.
Yay! I luff being luffed on Nam~ ♥
1. You're both Sonadow fangirls! WELCOME TO MY CULT Plus Nam wrote the first Sonadow lemon I ever liked, so mega points right there~ ♥♥♥
2. You're both so awesome and sweet! AND you guys remember Earthbound, which came as a huge surprise for me! *_______________* Gosh, I hope you guys play again
so you can write fic.3. I love the muse conversations and plot bunny probes in your journal. It's fun to see the frustration, bickering and ideas! ;D
no subject
Date: 2007-09-30 04:21 am (UTC)1. Actually, we're one Sonadow fangirl, and one Sonadow fanboy
but I can pretend, Master. But yes, it would seem that I'm commonly confused for a girl online gawdwhatswrongwithme2. I don't know if Nam remembers Earthbound or not, but I really want to play it again. Along with so many other games for SNES. Need to play Earthbound. Blargh.
3. Frustration and bickering are our normal dynamic. It happens a lot.

Date: 2007-09-29 01:06 pm (UTC)I also like your commentary on fics and the types of fics you don't like. I especially like your insight into Love triangles, it's very true! (Read/watch Fruits Basket, Puri?) It also makes me want to read the Phantom of the Opera. There's a lot of hype about it down here, as the opera is being performed for a couple of months at our Royal Melbourne theatre, but it's extremely expensive, so I think the book would be lovely. :)
no subject
Date: 2007-09-29 10:57 pm (UTC)Yes, I saw the first several episodes of Fruits Basket! (Up to the Hatori episode at a sister's friend's apartment, then I had to go home. T-T) I loved it very much and would love to see the rest. *___________________* (It's a Puri*Series! :D) Yuki and Kyou are both sweet and wonderful and Tohru deserves them both (Yuki/Tohru/Kyou OT3!), but I was kinda leaning toward Yuki/Tohru, so the manga's gonna disappoint me in that aspect. XDDDD! Ah well.
PotO is awesome~ ♥ I still need to watch the 1925 version with Lon Chaney, that's supposed to be good. :o And gosh, I envy you. T____T I wanna gooooooooooooooo~! Hell, I've always wanted to play Christine Daae myself. Have fun with the book! The prose gets a little Victorian and drags a bit, but it reads like a spooky detective/mystery novel, and it's really beautiful and chilling. *____________________*

Date: 2007-09-29 10:59 pm (UTC)1. Your comments always cheer me up~! ♥ Not to mention you've got me really interested in exploring Giygas. :o
2. Chaotix fans unite! Plus you're one of the few Vecpio shippers out there, which is another billion points in my book. *_______________*
3. You're sweet and wonderful and it's fun and soothing being around you. :3 That, and I always think of Ayame when I see you! :o
