I'm a little ashamed to say I love the movie. Pixar seems like an insanely honest company to me, so my impression is that the makers (save for the thief) honestly hasn't a clue about it. D:
I have too much respect for John Lasseter to believe that he's aware of this theft. What makes it worse is that there doesn't seem to be any way to prove that this person's mother did this.
Augh. :/ It's tragic. It's kind of why I worry about doing original stories online. Someone could easily steal that. I wouldn't care so much if someone ripped off my fanfiction for another.
John Lasseter's a good man. If he knew what was going on, he wouldn't have let it happen. Alas, the movie's already made, so nothing can be done.
That's why I intend to work on my original stuff online, showing only close friends and such. If I DO post snippets online, it would be a special Friend's Only-Journal. Mmmm, privacy. XD
>( I met a guy once who designed some characters for the Marvel comics and they screwed him over, too. I can't remember which ones they were, but DAMN. >> And then people keep asking me if I'm going to send anything in to a publisher. Publishers can bite my ass.
Man, that sucks. I doubt anyone would want to rip me off, but blergh. I think I heard something about getting a copyright for your stuff though, like certain original characters you created?
As for copyrighting stuff, from what I know, everything that...well...you created is 'copyrighted to yourself' and that should be enough, provided you can prove that it's all yours--going to a lawyer and actually getting yourself set up with all the fancy paperwork is even better, though.
I haven't exactly looked into it yet, which is bad because I should, but...=/ It's yours either way, but it's good to have that extra 'muscle' on your side, yeah?
Looooooooooong story there. XD Basically, since I was a little kid, I was a huuuuuuuuuuuuuge bug fan. So when I saw the first trailer for Bug's Life, you could count on it my teeny little self was excited. Waited for days and days and days until I finally saw it... and hated it. Left the theater in tears.
Certain things in movies make me squeamish. When I was little, I hated Dumbo. It broke my heart seeing a cute little elephant humiliated and teased while his mother gets locked up trying to protect him, and the poor little guy is tormented even MORE until oh... the last fifteen minutes of the movie? Couldn't see it without bawling into tears. (Especially since I HUMONGOIDLY related to Dumbo and similar characters) Even today, my insides squirm at the memories.
Back to Bug's Life. One of the highlights was that Puri loved Flik. Completely related to and cheered for him. Yes, he was a little goofy and spastic, but I didn't mind. His heart was in the right place and he wanted to make things right for the colony. What does he get for it? Venom. The colony (with the exception of Dot and the Queen) treats him like shit. They even tricked him by sending him out to die so he'd be out of the way for good. Cue the circus bugs. Understandably he freaks out, but then they prove to be heroes by using teamwork to save Dot from the bird. Then oh ho ho ho... they get discovered, right AFTER they make the bird. Forget that silly little plan. FLIK LIED TO TEH COLONY OH NOEX LEAVE ADN NEVR COME BAK BITCH (What's Dot? Chopped liver?) And just... it's disgusting how they treat him. Especially Atta. ("OHHHH IM NERVOUS I THINK THEYRE WATCHING ME WAITING 4 ME TO SCREW UP. JUZT LYKE U FLIK!!11!1" when in reality she's as shallow as the rest of the colony) In return, completely crushes him and sees himself what the colony sees him as all along: a failure.
I... have never gotten over that. There's also the loops and lack of character development and chemistry that bugged me (no pun intended), but it's mainly that issue that irks me most. I'm all for "Underdog-Makes-It-To-The-Top" movies and all, but I don't want to feel miserable for 80 minutes until the happy ending. :/
I don't really think Flik was tricked per se, but they more let him do his job in a "Ah heck, he wants to put his life on the line, just let him do it" way. His accident at the beginning of the movie did nearly cost the lives of the colony, and if he really wanted to make it up to them, it'd probably be best to let him go. Which is also why they were so angry with his lying about the circus members being fighters, because that was something that could've risked many lives. It didn't help that this was probably the second strike of Flik's near-fatal accidents, so...
tl;dr Don't get me wrong here, I'm fine with and understand why you dislike the movie, but wanted to share my two cents on those points.
Maybe if we were shown more of Flik's mistakes, it'd be more understandable. Also, the whole Harvester-spilling-the-seeds thing felt like pure luck to me, and didn't like being cheated like that. Also, grasshoppers can swim, can't they? Why didn't the ants just say where the food was so they'd dive in the water and get back the seeds? (Grasshoppers are great swimmers!) Heck, the grasshoppers could've even tortured the ants (they can swim too! For days and days without drowning!) by making them labor to pull the seeds out from the water--that would really be something they would strangle Flik for.
Not to mention Hopper had what... 3 scenes total? PT Flea even had more development than he did! DDD:
But I digress. I guess because it was a bug movie, I had high expectations. @.@;;;
