Anybody think name wank is as stupid as I do? Old*Sk00l fans, whine as much as you can about how saying the name "Eggman" is like a wizard saying "You-Know-Who Voldemort". I hate to tell ya the truth about Robotnik, but...

When the very first Sonic game came out in Japan, Sonic's nemesis was known as "Eggman".

Only when SA2 came out did they fuse the names, and he became Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik.

Let's break it up this way, shall we?

Anything Pre-Dreamcast (AoStH/SatAM/SU/etc.) = Robotnik
Anything Post-Dreamcast (SA1+2, Sonic Rush, etc.) = Eggman. Robotnik works here too, but is usually to Pre-Dreamcast.

Should you need to distinguish between say... Robotnik and Eggman, say Julian or Kintobor and people will know who you're talking about. Overall, the Robotniks in each universe are just as distinct as their Sonics they're trying to squash. So STFU

Gaaaaaaaaawd. @.@;;; Reminds me of the Light vs. Raito wank over at Death Note fandom. They're the same thing WTF

Anyway, going on a short trip to Austin. I got diagnosed with a new medicine, so hopefully I'll be less wanky.

...now people are complaining about whether the poor doctor is Eggman or Robotnik?
Sheesh... fanpeople get crazier every day. ;;

When Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones was coming out in America, people made SUCH A FUSS over the name changes, acting like it was the end of the world and the game would turn into "Fire Emblem: Fluffy Bunnies Battle The Negaverse" because they called the heroine Eirika instead of Eirik. D:

Reason number two-hundred-and-seventy-I-lost-count I keep my nose out of fandom-at-large, because people have a fit over the weirdest things and it depresses me to be around them @_@

I wish people would at least do some research before complaining, because like you said, Robotnik = Eggman! (far as the game-verse goes) If they'd take five minutes to look it up, they could save their breath to whine about more "important" things (like "amy sucks omg" or "cream should die lololol!1")

I got to hand it to you for sticking with Sonic-dom after all that! You must have a legendary constitution :) and yes, the whole Light vs. Raito thing is dopey! The creator said it was "Light", yes, and some people have a preference for saying "Raito", and that's fine too, but it's when people have epic slappy-fights over it that I get a headache DX augh people.

oh god, that's such a sad thing to fight over XD not that I'm really in the fandom, but I don't really care which name he gets called. I always call him Robotnik because that's how I saw it on the Sega games and it just completely stuck :/ But as to what anyone else calls him, either is fine with me XD

(and I'm not in Death Note fandom either, I've never even read it, but oh god Light/Raito wank is hilarious.)

Reminds me a bit of Toadstool/Peach and Koopa/Bowser. Do people bitch and moan about that still?

Heck. For anyone that is interested, the princess has always been called Peach in Japan and the dragon-turtle is always called Koopa over there as well.

I've always wondered if people do that, too! I've been hoping that because Bowser's been referred to as "[King] Bowser Koopa" over here, and Peach has been called "Princess Peach Toadstool" since Mario 64/Yoshi's Safari over here, people accept it without making a fuss.

I'd be crushed if something as silly as a name-debate tore apart Mario fans, too!

Yeah. I guess the name debate is rather silly. If anything, I'm sure the whole debate about the Marios being twins or not would be more likely to tear the fandom apart.

For the record, Yoshi's Island on the SNES refers to them as "twins", but the GBA version simply called them "brothers". Speaking of YI, there's the whole debate on if the Mario Bros. lived in Brooklyn or not. Argh!

Goodness, I had that same "brothers vs. twins" debate with a couple of my friends a while back. I mentioned the SNES YI said "twins", but I hadn't played the GBA remake so I didn't know it was re-worded.

I never really realized that Mario-canon has a lot of baffling little nuances like this 'till I sat down and thought about it XD Scary! But at least it isn't as convoluted as Sonic-canon, what with its several variations and a kajillion different characters in each to keep track of.

Someone proposed a theory that his first name was Eggman, and his last was Robotnik.

Oh man not this AGAIN. I don't think dispute is ever going to be settled.

I personally just call him Eggman and ignore being "corrected".

Really fandom, get a life. Oh wait, can't say that; fangirls might EAT ME.

I'm used to using either name; depending on what show I'm watching/comic I'm reading/game I'm playing/etc, I switch between his names so darn often.

THIS I DID NOT KNOW.

Jess's Sonic IQ = +1 I'm making an icon of that now

I'm fine with either name. I alternate between calling him Eggman and Robotnik and am equally fine with both XD

I call him Robotnik when I'm refering to AoStH, SatAM or Archie Sonic, and Eggman when refering to the games *shrug* I prefer Robotnik, but I know who people are talking about whichever they use, so I'm not gonna throw a fit XD
