Sometimes, I wonder what would've happened if I grew up a SEGA Kid instead of a Nintendo Kid.

Not that I'd ever EVER trade my Nintendo roots for anything. Just that the isolation kinda hurts when you don't share the same old*sk00l memories as everyone else. I could speak of 8-Bit NES goodness among Mario and Kirby fans, and squeal immediately when I spot Bubble Bobble and Excitebike. The closest to old*sk00l Sonic I got was a couple Game Gear games and 4 AoStH tapes, so I feel lost/confused in a SatAM/Archie/Fleetway crowd. (Not to mention I couldn't play anything from SEGA Genesis until Mega & Gems Collection came out) 'Specially hurts when they're all "OMG THE NEW SONIC GAMEZ SUXX0RZ" when you know, SA2B was what got me curious about the "golden days" and seek the fandom and older games in the first place. :/

Albeit, I always felt if I ever DID say something like that, I'd get comments of "OMG U N00b GET AWAY FROM ME!!1!1" and be avoided like a hyper 15-year-old Sonic X otaku. (And I don't even like Sonic X. XDD! I just icon the pretty art 'cause decent game screenshots are tough to find) Dude, you see me wishing everyday it were the 90s again. No doubt, that would be me boycotting the "new" Polly Pocket/Littlest Pet Shop/Trollz at the front door. I'm just not interested in Archie, no matter how much "ZOMG THE GOLDEN DAYS BEFOER THEY SUCK3D!11!" or "IAN PIATTO IZ RITING NOW!11" is thrown at me. Also? I have little access to SatAM and chances of downloading the entire series has always backfired on me. Sure, I know there's YouTube. But I'm very picky with how I watch the series, and I prefer seeing all the episodes in order--and not all episodes appear to be uploaded last time I checked. That, and I'd much prefer a time when I can watch it for my own personal enjoyment, not for you to nag at me 'cause OMG HOW DAAAAAAAAAARE I NEGLECT SATAM, THE GREATEST CARTOON OF ALL TIME. So sorry you feel soooooooooo repressed because TEH OMG EBIL SEGA fans are nowadays common. But geez Louise, there's more of you than you might think. Your fandom is not gonna shrivel up and die the next Knuxouge fic that's uploaded instead of your precious Knuckles/Julie-Su. Whenever I go on DA, the kajillions of art is proof of that.

I see the Sonic universes as different fandoms. Well, kinda. ^^;;; But you know what I mean. None of them is the same Sonic. I just happen to be a gamer girl who's had her start playing the games, therefore that's what I'm closest to. I never said anything like "OMG SEGA*SONIC IZ TEH ONLY TRUE SONIC ADN SATAM/ARCHI3 IZ AMERIKAN NOT JAPAN3S3 ADN NEDZ TO DYE!11!". Far from it. (I didn't say SatAM & Archie were the same thing either, but that's another subject. @.@;;;) I just don't feel the same connection for Sally, Bunnie and Antoine as I do for Mario, Kirby and Link. My nostalgia lies elsewhere.

Finally. My sister's a SatAM fan. I'm a SEGA fan. I don't push SEGA on her. So don't pressure me about your Sonicverse? :o Funkily enough, the time you're not shoving the series down my throat, maybe I'll finally get a hold of SatAM on DVD or something someday and watch it. Doesn't mean I'll immediately jump into writing SatAM fics or be apart of massive fandom discussions or anything, just that I like watching the show.

I don't want people ratting on me that, "No, it's not the 0ld*sk00l crowd's fault for being cranky, it's people and SEGA*fanatics like YOU that glut the net with 'OMG SHADOW 4EVR~!!11!' and support crappy video games and television." I've had enough of that crap already. ('Sides, it still gives ya no excuse to be an ass. :P) Paranoid? Yes I am. But my journal, my thoughts. This has been gnawing at me forever, and while I may get some people irritated, it's better than hiding it and lashing out on someone who didn't deserve it. Whiny? Maybe. But better my journal than LJ comms or DA comments.

Finally, the fans I'm ranting about are elitists/extremists, not fans of SatAM/Archie/etc. in general. The rest of you (aka sane fans) I'm fine with and you don't have to worry.

But geez... at least AoStH and SU fans don't tend to explode on ya. @.@;;;

=/ I was a SEGA kid growing up, and personally? When I heard that Nintendo had got ahold of SEGA and saved my favourite video game character from going down the drain, I was actually THANKFUL.

I'll expand on that...

I got my first gaming console when I was 4, which was the SEGA Mega Drive (Genesis?). My first games were Bubsy, Wonder Boy and Sonic 2. Sonic is my oldest and earliest fandom, I suppose, because when I was as young as 5 or 6 I was going to Sonic Tours and cuddling with big plushsuited Sonics.

I don't ever remember watching the Sonic TV series with Sally in it; I read the comics on occasion, but wasn't really that interested in anything but the games until I saw another one of the TV series' (the one that Scratch and Grounder were in, and Tails; I saw it and thought "Yes, THIS is what Sonic is really like!") I -loathed- Sonic Underground, for some reason, but I loved the games; I still own every Sonic 16-bit game except Sonic 1, for the Mega Drive.

My interest was really renewed by Sonic Gaiden; that's easily my favourite Sonic-based animation, even to this day, and it's the one I feel portrayed the characters best. Sonic X is good, 'specially the Amy factor, but Gaiden's still my favourite.

As I said; I was thankful for Nintendo picking up the Sonic games, because they were my favourite series and characters. I didn't own a Dreamcast; I opted for the Nintendo 64, so when I heard Nintendo was releasing Sonic games for the GC I was ecstatic.

And that's basically it XD;; Although I'm not sure I'm fond of the idea of Silver the Hedgehog...

I toyed around with "Sonic 2" and "Sonic Chaos" on Game Gear, the latter I especially liked 'cause I could play as Tails. *nod* AoStH ("The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog"--that'd be what show you're talking about. ;D), bless its soul, was absolute love. To this day, Scratch & Grounder are STILL my favorite enemy sidekicks, and when I toyed around with Game Gear, I imagined Sonic & Tails's personalities being like they were in AoStH. It felt so right.

I saw the first three episodes of SU on YouTube for laughs. XDDD! While I liked Manic and all and some elements were interesting, I just CANNOT stomach the song sequences. XDDD;;; So... too corny for my tastes.

"Sonic Gaiden"? I don't think I heard of that one, though it sounds familiar a little? Link me pleeeeeeeease? *_______* Unless you mean the Sonic Movie/OAV... in that case, I still need to watch it, if I can get a hold of the Japanese version somehow. ._.;;;

No kidding! Nintendo never failed me... heck, my roots even came back to rescue my current favorite fandom! Sure, the recent games have been bombs lately. But the fandom sure as hell ain't goin' anywhere. XDD I liked "Sonic Heroes" okay, though I didn't think it was the best in the series. (But I don't froth at the mention of it either. XDDD!) You already know how I feel about ShtH--part of me knew it wasn't gonna receive well, but another part also knew I was gonna have fun anyway no matter what others say. Heck, I like it better than Heroes! "Sonic Riders" was okay--just nothing legendary. Doesn't mean SEGA's not trying--"Sonic Rush" is proof of that. XD I'm hoping for Next-Gen to be at LEAST good on an Adventure scale. When you're going back to your roots, those things take time.

My roots were with nintendo as well, but back when I DID have a sonic fandom, it was within the genesis and gamegear games up until 3D blast, the AoStH series, and up to issue 60 of the comic back when it was decent! xD I cant say sonic sucks nowadays as i HAVE enjoyed SAdv2 and shadow's prescence, but I'm just overwhelmed at how the franchise grew and evolved since I left the fandom some time after Sonic and Knuckles. Sometimes I wish i could get that fandom back because anything Sonic-related makes me think of you and a couple of others now. Between 1994-1998, I had a rabid sonic fandom that completely outdid my current Crash Bandicoot and Disgaea fandoms. I didnt choose between the games/comics/cartoons which I liked best- I just loved the whole damn universe on Sonic-

The main concepts that a freakin' fast hedgehog, flying fox, big-fisted echidna, and a mechanics whiz doofy-looking fat badguy in a mustache romp around these sunny happy worlds for peace, restoration, and funky gems that create powers is what Sonic is all about, no matter how that's adapted within the classic games, the recent games, the comics or any of its cartoons, what stories have built from those adaptations or what/how many more characters get added to the soup.

Now we can just say that the Sonic Universe is about a freakin' fast hedgehog, flying fox, big-fisted echidna, said echidna's posse, a science project hedgehog, a stalker girl hedgehog with a mallet, a bunny girl that melts souls, etc etc etc, and a mechanics whiz doofy-looking fat badguy in a mustache romp around these (usually?) sunny happy worlds for peace, restoration, and funky gems that create powers. Adventure. X. Next Gen or otherwise. :)

I miss those days...

It also didnt help that most sonic fansites I went to in 1999 when I was introduced to the internet had more fan characters and generalistic furry art than anything officially to do with Sonic...

I think I feel the same way with Pokémon nowadays. XDDD! I still love the series, and its my gateway fandom and everything! Back in ol' 1998/1999, I dug my fingers in whatever Pokémon I could, I was O-B-S-E-S-S-E-D. (Well, except the card game. Never really got into it, though I still keep my Lucky Jigglypuff Card. XDD!) Had magazines, Pokémon books, Pokémon stamps, etc. I caught all the scoop on the Pokémon Animé and upcoming games, and saw "Mewtwo Strikes Back!" in the theater ON the first day. Caught "Revelation Lugia" and "Lord of the Unknown Tower" in other theaters, too. (And went as far as downloading Japanese*Mewtwo and buying a fansub of the second movie that I went on a rabid 4KIDS hate spree looooooooong before Kirby, Shaman King, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and One Piece were translated) I think waiting for Pokémon Gold & Silver to come out had to have been the LONGEST and most impatient wait I ever had for a video game my entire life. ("Shadow the Hedgehog" didn't hold a CANDLE to Gold/Silver)

And now? I can't even keep up with the Animé anymore. XDDD! Not only that, I can't just say I like the Pokémon manga, 'cause now you've gotta be specific. What used to be like, three (Dengenki no Pikachuu, Pokémon Adventures, Magical Pokémon Journey) is now around 10 so it gets confusing. @.@;;; There's now, what? An 8th movie coming out? And I still haven't even seen Mewtwo Returns yet! The only thing I'm not remotely lost in Pokémon these days and which I still follow are the video games--so it has me want to punch R/B/Y & G/S/C extremists in the face whenever they're all "OMG RUBY/SAPPHIRE SUCKS!!11!11!". At least I catch up with my first fandom in some way, right? And I like Colisseum (And "XD: Gale of Darkness" is fun so far too) and am looking forward to Diamond/Pearl. It's the Pokémon Diamond fiasco all over again, only this time it's real! XDDD!

I can understand how it is to be an old*sk00l fan and come back to what feels like an entirely different fandom. It's like someone built a factory in place where your childhood treehouse used to be, right? I'd be confused too if I loved SatAM growing up, then check out the Sonic section on FF.net, and be all "Shadow? Rouge? Blaze? Uh... buh? Where's Knothole, Robotropolis and the SWAT-BOTs? oO;;;" Like me in the Pokémon section: "Wow, when did Ash/Gary's Sister become such a popular ship lately? Oh wait, that Haruka chick..."

SKIFREE ICON OMFG.

*cough cough*

Err, I'm going to have to agree with [livejournal.com profile] galuxkitty I grew up on Sega (I don't really know anything of SatAM/Archie either...AoStH, oh I miss that! I loved watching that before school in the morning ;.;), so I was distraught when Sega died. Finding out that Nintendo was going to keep producing Sonic games came as a great relief.

And I know how you feel. Sometimes I wish I had a Nintendo background so I could know more about the games that everyone talks about (more about Mario, Kirby, etc.).

Personally, I just like the whole shabang. I don't see why you'd have to be a fan of either old or new, comicverse or gameverse. *shrug*

I knew that'd get nifty responses. X333~! ♥ That's another whole load of nostalgia right there!

Nintendo's awesome. You can count on us, baby! ;D I always held Shigeru Miyamoto in high regard. :33 ♥

It's never too late to discover old*sk00l. ;33 One of my biggest gaps in my childhood I wish I could fill was having an SNES. Mom thought it was the same thing as the NES, so the latter system was all I ever played until the N64, so that was a big jump for me from 8-bit to 3D models. I thought N64 graphics were gonna be like the graphics from the DKC series or something. XDD! But yeah. As a result of having no SNES, I missed out on a lotta classics like Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Tetris Attack!, Super Mario RPG, Earthbound, DKC, etc. But nowadays, I've managed to get those games on Ebay, and SMRPG proved to be one of the greatest Christmas gifts Santa ever gave me. When Mega & Gems Collection came out? I was just SUCKED into Sonic CD, Sonic 1 & 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, etc. It was like the Mario times were back again, only this time, I was running alongside a speedy blue hedgehog. *_____________*

Why can't we all just get along and love our favorite Sonics in peace? *goes and gives Sonic, Tails, & Knuckles AND Shadow, Rouge & Cream huuuuuuuuuuuge hugs. And practice my Scratch!Laugh*

Oh, fandom. Wherever you go, there'll always be old-hats ranting about n00bs, n00bs being clueless of ranting about the old-hats, and the sane (old-hat, new-hat, red-hat, blue-hat) scratching their heads at both and then going back to their porn fanfic/fanart/whatever. I was brought up on Sega too, but my mom's efforts to keep me there failed when I saw a Sonic game in the store. We couldn't afford a Genesis until I was nine, so I started reading the Sonic comics for a while. When they became harder to find, I stopped. And for that, I am grateful.

I mean, Archie!Sonic was good. It was very well-done, it had depth and plot and character, and its in-house cast managed to keep the attention and focus on the "sega" characters while still being beloved an d admired by everyone. It had some pretty genius plots and some concepts that Sega yas yet to top. I frequently try to bring Archie!Sonic philosophy and plot bunnies into Segaverse fics.

But like any comic book, like any solid series, it had to go through some big changes to keep going. And I feel that these changes weren't for the better. Modern Archie is nothing like what it was when I was in grade school, and I am grateful that I don't read it. In fact, if I hadn't been stoped by my RL circumstances, one of the plots in it might have scared me away from Sonic for good (i.e. Cotton-eye Knuckles and that Aurora bullshit. Bitch please, my God flooded the Earth and he's nicer than you. I hate her so much I almost used the C-word. I've called someone the C-word like once in my whole life).

If anything, I view modern Sega!Sonic as a spiritual successor to oldschool Archie!Sonic. They both have large casts, focus on a handful of characters, and a distinctly spiritual element that is never quite explained. Both also put considerable effort into redeeming, or at least humanizing, some of the "minor" villains (In the case of Archie!Sonic, The Dark Legion and, even to a degree, Eggman, although it was too little too late. In SegaSonic, it's Shadow, Eggman, and Gerald).

I think that people who are rabit at fans for anything are absurd. I can understand a respectfully incredulous "You like that crap?" But anything more is outrageous. And yes, there are morons who are screwing up the fandom in both cases--the Archie!Nazis on one side and the OMGDUMESHADOW fuckwits on the other. But those are just part of fandom, and people need to calm down about them, everyone, both sides.

So yeah... I'm done rambling.

I feel sorry for those who loved the Archie comic and had to go through watching it mutate itself and all that icky stuff. Whenever I open the newspaper and read the latest Garfield strip, a little part of me dies. 'Cause like... when I grew up, I loved Garfield. It was hilareous, it had charm, it had heart, and my family, relatives and I used to recite our favorite strips and it was all good. And gosh, the cartoon and holiday specials! Now those were some nifty stories, right there. But poof! Bound to happen to long-running comics these days... they lose that flavor and become dry and stale. Nowadays it's just the same old formuliac material that just isn't funny. :/ I'm sad that my other two favorite comics (Calvin & Hobbes and The Far Side) ended their run long ago, but it was for the best, right? I'd bawl my eyes out if Calvin were still running and it lost all the charm it ever had for the comic.

When I write Sonicfic, I tend to put a mix of what I liked from both old*sk00l and new*sk00l games. So if one minute, Shadow's running through a place in a writing style that oddly reminds you of platformer levels from Sonic 1, don't be surprised. XDD I like adding little flairs of nostalgia to what I write. :)

No kidding, eh? @.@;;; (Archie!Nazis. Hee hee, thanks. I gotta memorized that. ;D) Old*sk00l elitists, SatAM extremists, Shadow molesters... they all need to rot. @.@;;; But eh, they're apart of life like mosquitoes in the tropics are. Don't throw too much a commotion about 'em, and pay 'em no heed, and you'll handle fandom juuuuuuuust fine.

The funny thing is that I actually DID grow up as a Nintendo AND Sega kid. First, I had a console "Dendy" or whatever it was called, I only played it, then after a few years I got a Sega and spent just as much time playing it.. I didn't get a Sony Playstation after that, though.

People who liked both back in the day are awesome. ♥ My sister and I got whatever system we could get our hands on, provided there were games we were interested in. (N64 was for Mario, Zelda, etc., Gameboy for Pokémon, Playstation for Final Fantasy, etc.) We never really paid much attention to console wars anyway.

Except that one time we boycotted X-Box 'cause of Bill Gates. XDDD! But ya never know--if PS3 is TOO expensive, I may as well come down to 360 after all. At least there's Rareware games on it! XDDDD!

XD I was absolutely a Nintendo kid too. I own a SNES, N64, GameCube, GBA, GBA Color, GBA SP and DS. The only SEGA console I own is a Dreamcast, and the only games I have for it are Space Channel 5, and the Japanese box set special edition of SA2 (I have no idea if it's playable on my R2 Dreamcast o.o). But yeah, Sonic obsession came much later, and sometimes I feel kinda sad that I didn't 'grow up on' Sonic. I used to watch AoStH when I was little, and played Sonic 3 at the arcade... but I was always a diehard Nintendo kid and that's where my loyalty is too. Heh, and also, like you, I don't like Sonic X... I just love the art, for icons and stuff XD

Lesse... I had NES, N64 (many of which my brother broke. XDD!), Gamecube, Gameboy Color, GBA, GBA SP, and DS. My sister also owns what I don't: SNES, PS1, PS2, and once a Game Gear before she sold it. I think the one time I had experience with SEGA Genesis was when I was watching someone play Sonic 2 at my mom's friend's house upstairs or something. I think I tried playing Sonic 1 too and got as far as Spring Yard Zone before I had to leave/die or something. XDD! But yep, that was about it. Had glimpses at Knuckles at the store now and then, but overall was outta the Sonic scene for a long time.

Sonic X honestly had a lotta potential, IMO. But noooooes, they had to waste it. Just felt like a rushjob to me and I just... couldn't get into it, even from watching the Japanese version. @.@;;; I get a little fun comparing and contrasting the Sonic X version of the two Sonic Adventures (The whole Gamma & Amy thing felt more developed in the Animé, and I liked how they named the Flickie "Lily" instead of just plain ol' "Birdie". XDD;;;), but otherwise, they felt really darn rushed while the other episodes moved slower than they should. XDDD! Don't get me started on Chris either. Just... ugh! I could never sympathize with that kid. XDDDD! I'll admit second season sounds more interesting, with Cosmo and more Chaotix goodness and all, but reading other bits just kinda have me rolling my eyes thinking, "Darn it, I could do better than that, even if I were five-years-old!" @.@;;; But yeah, even if the art gets REAL wonky and lazy at times, there's still plenty of pretty shots to toy around with for icons, layouts and the like. And hey! Maria Robotnik doesn't look like a rejected Barbie, and is actually gorgeous! XDDD!

I ♥ my SkiFree icon sooooooooo much. The guy who made it was a genius. X333~!

Ehhh, the Archie comics were never fantastic, to be honest. Trust me, as someone who's read them since she was about 11 and even EARLIER than that. And I'm 20 now. Ouch. They kinda suked.

Also, yes, the SatAM was fantastic and deserved another season, and though you should watch it, I understand you don't have the availability! XD Furthermore, the new SEGA games aren't godawful. I think they're glitchy as hell, but then, Sonic games always kinda have been. But it helped me fall in love again with the Chaotix. YES to the dysfunctional family. :D

Yes to the Chaotix! *________* Hell, if it wasn't for Heroes, I wouldn't have fangirled them like I would today. (And learning they were 0ld*sk00l just adds even more cool points in my book. ^^)
