here_inmyheadI feel like this is one of those things when I should've scribbled about my trip in my diary while I was having it. I feel too tired to type about it. XD I'll just say Wisconsin is wonderful, I saw a lotta movies (but not Pirates yet. *sniffle*), the sky has stars, the grass is green (*GASP* Not straw!?), trees and forests and wildflowers exist, the summer temperature is cool and wonderful... everything I missed from the country overall. Now I'm stuck in urban Texas again, to learn the minute you step outside in unbearable heat, 20 mosquitoes the size of dimes land on ya. You heard me right. DIMES. Big mosquito infestation going on in Corpus Christi right now. @.@;;;
Oh, and I also read the first 6-7 chapters of Wicked by Gregory McGuire. Didn't like it though. I wanted to read about Elphaba and her defying gravity! Not her mom cheating on her dad (who's a PRIEST OMG GASP) on some Quadling, all three I don't give a rat's ass about. Not to mention it felt less like Oz and more like a neighborhood with "OMG REEEEEEEEEAL LIFE" and desperate housewives. I read fantasy to get away from that crap, dammit! :/ I hope I like the musical better.
Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones though, I liked. *nod* Haven't gotten far on that either, but I definitely look forward to it. Sure, it kinda has "show & tell" issues ("Sophie was angry. Sophie was very deft with her needle. Sophie was sad."), but I don't mind it that much. I figure it has to do with style, and I don't mind the simplicity of it. In fact, I rather like the simplicity. ^^ I also laughed out loud at a couple sentences said by Calcifur--which I wish fantasy books would do more often. Make me laugh. :( But nooooo, the fantasy genre always has to be "OMG SO SERIOUS" all the time. :/ I saw the movie before I read the book, so I kinda had experience beforehand with Howl. XDD;;; I hear the book gets humongoidly different halfway though, as well as a funky-as-heck ending. So as I'll read, I'll have to pay attention so it'll all make sense at the last page. :)
Meanwhile, I'm the only fantasy kid in the world who's never read a single Terry Pratchett book in her life. Which makes me weep. I hear so many great things about him from everyone and my friends, and I'd kill to get a hold of Discworld or Good Omens, but it's like... he's rarely ever mentioned where I live. oO;;; I'll have to ask the libraries if they have Pratchett or something. Any recs for me? I know he's written a ton of stuff, and I was wondering if there's a particular book you know fits my taste and excites me that I can curl up with. I need to read again. ._.;;;
Meanwhile, I need to rest and get off the compy for a while. I started a game of "Pokémon XD" last night. :o They sure say the hero's name a lot in that game. XDDD;;; "It's nice to see you, CROW!" "CROW! Do you think you can find your sister? Thanks CROW!" "We're counting on you, CROW!" "Y helo thar, CROW! Buttsecks?"

Date: 2006-07-13 05:55 pm (UTC)I read a LOT of Pratchett, though. We have -all- the Discworld novels to date and I've read most of them. We also have two of his childrens books. 'The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents' is -awesome-. =D
As for an actual Discworld novel? Hnn... If you have patience and want to see Pratchett sort of come into his own, then very definately start at The Colour of Magic.
If you want a better glimpse... I'd suggest Wyrd Sisters, actually. It starts the whole Granny Weatherwax arc, and is almost like... Pratchett does Macbeth. But if it was focusing on the witches involved. Sort of. o_o XD It's hard to describe, but it's fun! And Granny Weatherwax is a delightful character.
And now I wanna dig up some of my Discworld novels. XD I love the Death books. (3 <3<3<3<3<3
