Well, I just spent my entire Saturday typing an essay for [livejournal.com profile] hated_character: 7 pages worth, and that's as long as one of Puri's normal one-shot fanfiction.

Character in question? Shadow.

*CUE TELEVISION STANDBY BEEP*

*cough* *hack!* Ooouuuuuw...! XDDDDDD;;; *cue Puri, broken & bleeding*

Yeah... I'm a little intimidated to post it myself. ^^;;; Why do I always fear I'll cause wank at comms? XDD;;;

Personally I think people who complain about Shadow being ZOMG SO h8d are just whiny. No offense, but Shadow has the most fans out of everyone, they completely overshadow Shadow haters, and a good chunk of Shadow fans are morons.

Again, no offense :P I can see you being upset for some of the reasons to hate Shadow, but yeah.

Well, you see, there's a BIG difference. I certainly don't go around talking to someone, they telling me they don't like Shadow, and I go "OMG you dun lyk Shadow, how COULD u???!!11" and flame them to death like the average fanboy/fangirl would do. I don't force people to like him, and can *GASP* perfectly coexist with someone who didn't like him. It's just that I'd read people's reasons why they didn't like Shadow and well... it's like we played a different game or something. oO;;

I surf DA & LJ, I look around--Sonic's the most liked, trust me. When it comes to polls, he and Shadow often tie (Shadow beating him sometimes, yes), but everywhere you go, people love Sonic. You actually see a lot of Shadow resentment piling lately, especially with the whole "Shadow" game fiasco and all. (Right now, half the fandom likes him, the other hates his guts) Could be the different parts of the Internet I visit--but even then, I get pretty wary of mentioning Shadow, be it "OMG EEEEE SHADOW IZ SOOOO COOOOL!!!1" or even sneers as I'm written off as yet another moron in "Sonic"dom.

Maybe I'm a TAD paranoid, but eh. I wanted to type how I felt.

Well, bear in mind that the Sonic fans sneering at you are probably ones that have been sneered at and bashed/flamed for not liking Shadow, probably more than you.

And nuu, Shadow is the more popular. Even on the internet, and off the internet, people love him more, that's why he got his own game, and that's why he was brought back to begin with. Because he's so popular.

Maybe there are less people now with the game and all. And even if you're right, and Sonic is more popular, it's not by much, and Shadow himself is atleast close, and the second most popular for sure.

Though I do sympathize at you being sneered at for liking Shadow. That's just stupid :P

*butts in a bit*

I think that's a big part of the problem, in the end. It's gotten to the point in the Sonic fandom now where liking Shadow is becoming this bad thing.

Yes, Shadow is terribly popular. But you have to look at who he's popular -with-. I hate the fantards as much as every Shadow hater out there. But it's the sneering Sonic fans that are starting to step too far out the other side.

Why do I say this? Because it's gotten to the point, now, where someone can know me for a little while as an accuantaince and see that I'm obviously mature (at least decently. >.>;; XD ) and well spoken and such. I'm obviously very much -not- a fantard. You wouldn't call me one by any stretch, surely?

Then why is it that the moment I mention my being a Shadow fangirl to other Sonic fans, suddenly I'm ostracised?

I try to bear in mind that the Sonic fans sneering at me have been bashed and flamed before but... I'm sorry. If I prove myself, ahead of time, to be far about the idiotic fantards with the mentality of a two year old then I think I deserve a little more respect than suddenly having people turn on me just because I like a particular character or game.

I've hit the same point as Puri has. People hate Shadow not for being -Shadow-, but for peoples actions with them. And I, personally, think that's really really stupid. I might be sick up to my freaking eyeballs of the idiotic Inu Yasha fantards but I'm not going to go out there and bash on him for it. I know nothing about the character. He could be fascinating.

Shadow and his fantards aren't the same thing. And people have gotten to where they forget that. And to where they've started just throwing everyone who likes him into the same pile with the big sign 'Idiots' over top of them whether the person has proven themselves to be mature and intelligent or not.

And oh, look, I'm ranting. ;;

I wouldn't give a crap if Shadow -was- the most hated character in the Sonic fandom. So long as the people hating him gave reasons that made any sense other than 'His fans are STOOPID! >=O'.

(Just so you know? Not miffed at you or anything and I mean no offense, I just always feel the need to straighten that bit out. It's not the Shadow hating itself that bothers me (and I think Puri, too, if I read her rant right) it's the fact that, now, the Shadow haters have become as stupid as the fantards they originally hated the black hedgie for. And they don't even realize it.)

I completely agree on this part, it's stupid that people hold your preferences against you, when you act maturely and intelligently about it. I mean, if you were going "ZOMG I LOVE SHADOW HE IS MAH BOIFRIEND" then it would be understandable, but it's stupid people would jump down your throats for just liking him. I got some of this treatment with SatAM.

Personally I dislike Shadow ;p I liked in SA2 but I just think they bastardized him when they brought him back. I'm a little inclined to dislike Shadow for his fanbase but I know better :O

:butts in, in return:

I'm sorry but I find this point a bit invalid. I think it's entirely possible for people's perceptions of a character to be colored by how they see the FANS of said character portray him and act when the subject of him comes up. As a person who dislikes Shadow is fair bit, most people out there would be shocked to find that I originally liked him.

And a lot.

And it was the fans usage of him, that turned me OFF the character. I just got sick of hearing about him and how amazing and kewl and OMGHAWT he was. And sick of running across art and horribly written fanfiction of him.

And when you’re in the Sonic fandom and you DO tire of Shadow well, there’s no escaping him. It’s easy to say ‘ you don’t like the pie, don’t eat it,’ but when you see the friggen pie everywhere you turn… it can get rather tiring. And when Shadow fans get as outspoken as I’ve found a few of them to be. It can get rather tiring.

Also, you can’t tell me that you’ve never heard people rant and rave about how amazing something is and have it actually turn out off that something, be it game or movie, before you’ve ever even SEEN/played it! It happens all the time.

Now I’m not talking about going out and purposely bashing Shadow because I dislike him. I don’t do that. But I am saying it’s perfectly possible for the fans of a character to turn out off people OF said character.

And I for one, don’t think that really really stupid.

=P So there. :hides: ;0;!!

Now I’m not talking about going out and purposely bashing Shadow because I dislike him. I don’t do that.

But see, you've just completely altered everything with that line, alone. =O Because the bashing and public slander and hating is the problem. =O

If somebody dislikes Shadow simply because of his fantards but does so to themselves and doesn't go out publically bashing on Shadow or his fans because of it then yay. I, personally, have gotten to the point where I cannot -stand- the new Star Wars movies. The hype and the fanboying and everything has driven me right up the wall (LotR as well) but I would never -dream- of holding somebody's adoration of either of those against them. Nor go out of my way to wail and gnash my teeth and go 'They're destroying the series! >=O >=O' without any reason other than fantards.

Conversely if somebody has real reasons to dislike Shadow, for his character and actions, then I'd be able to put up with their bashing (at least to a degree. Never really understood character bashing). It wouldn't bother me to see someone giving valid and well thought out reasons for why the character, as a character, was displeasing or upsetting to them or whatever.

Take you, for example. I knew you hated Shadow, in the beginning. BUT! You never held my like of him against -me-. Nor did you, every time he came up, start flailing like a mad thing and ranting about how Sega is going down the tubes because of one character and how he's so horrible and blahblahblah. You've never, once, held my love of Shadow against me. (And, vice versa, I've never held your dislike of him against you.)

And that, right there, makes it a whole other ball of wax. =O *pets* <3<3

Old-sk00l "Star Wars" = LOVE *______* The new "Star Wars", I could care less about, I don't like them as much. I do however, adore "Revenge of the Sith", if that finally it felt like it could actually tie in to the original trilogy, and that I'm a sucker who likes to giggle and make fun of horrible dialouge. XDDD (But then, me constantly using Vader's "NOOOOOOOOOOOO" as a part of my daily vocabulary is probably YTMND's fault. XDDD;;;)

I can get not liking the rabid side of the fanbase if you've never liked said character/show in the first place. For example: Sephiroth from FF7. He never really appealed to me, and I couldn't see how he was the "Bezt VILLAIN EVA!!1" (Me: Oh, he went crazy and burned the town. He killed Aeris. Now he wants to become a God. Oh yay, how exciting.), yet the fanboys never shut up about him, and it's him (or Cloud) that constantly eats up all the votes at the *coughunfaircough* character matches at GameFAQs.com. Likewise, Draco Malfoy from HP is just a bratty, spineless bully to me, yet the fangirls worship him and portray him as a "POOR LONELY ABUSED SOUL BEATEN BY HIZ FATHER AND NEEEEEDS HERMIONE'S/GINNY'S/HARRY'S/BUCKBEAK'S TWU WUUUUUUV!!!1" so yeah... doesn't make my feelings any better for Draco.

And hey. If someone didn't like a character I liked, that never stopped me from being friends with 'em. ;D

Now this, I can understand. *nodnod* I mean, I like some things, but sometimes I enjoy them better under obscurity. To make myself clearer, I'll use an exmaple: let's take "Inu-Yasha".

Me, I must've read around 15 volumes of the manga and watched two or so episodes before the show got REAL popular among the fanbrats. It's not like I actively look for "Inu-Yasha" stuff--it just happens to pop up in my flist all the time, like comms and icon journals I watch. I enjoyed "Inu-Yasha" fine and uppity when no one much talked about it yet, but as all the fangirls stepped in, and you hear of the show everywhere, I kind of thought, "Ehhh... there's other stuff I like better." I guess its newfound popularity kind of brought to light the points which made the show likable among so many fans--I realized I was a candle compared to the fiery passion the fanbase has for the series. But hey, that's okay--there's other stuff I can squee about, be they as humongoid (and at times scary) as "Inu-Yasha" or stuff only me and a few friends adore somewhere in a corner. XDDD;;

I guess I have this amazing ability to stay neutral, or at least clinging to canon as close as possible. @.@ Playing the original games tended to be my therapetic solitude from REALLY bad fic, and it's like I become neutralized in a way, as I sucker myself into the game and away from the fangirls.

Yeah, that's the point I was trying to make. *nodnod* It's not people who don't like Shadow that bug me, it's why they don't like him. Anyone who doesn't like him for his character is fine in my book--I can understand. But blaming him soley for fangirls or plot inconsistances that's SEGA's fault? Red light! Red light!

It REALLY sucks to be shelved for liking or not liking something--it's like both Shadow lovers/haters lose these days. If you don't like him, the rabid fans will moan endlessly about it and flame you. If you DO like him, you'll be looked down as an idiot n00b with an IQ/maturity of your shoe size. When in the end, it's like "Dude... it's a character. It's not like we're discussing real-life celebrities. @.@"

(I'm not angry or mean offense to Sipp either. *nodnod*)

Yes, exactly!

It really -sucks- being judged and sorted (and even -after- someone has gotten to know you a bit) simply because of a character and his other fans. It's really silly to judge every single person you meet who likes a character (or even series) before you've gotten to know them.

Like I said up there. I can't stand Inu Yasha and New Star Wars fantards. But that doesn't mean just because somebody goes "Inu Yasha is such an -awesome- series. I love it! =3" doesn't mean I'm going to immediately start screaming at them and then write them off as an idiot and a lost cause. Not -everybody- is a fantard. ;;

I'm tired of having people assume that I am as soon as they hear the word 'Shadow' pass my lips (or my fingers or whatever. XD ).
