May. 28th, 2006 11:44 pmIiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit's official. Mom and I agree. We've had out suspicions, and we've talked to Dad about it. And I'll probably talk to him more.
My little brother has anorexia. Mom's seen more, but I spotted a little, and I think Dad too: He skips breakfast, lies about eating, constantly weighing himself, checking his pants to see how skinny he's getting, once stayed in the bathroom for a humongously long time, and my Mom found vomit somewhere, so we think he's throwing up. Did I mention he's extremely competitive? And he got a silver medal at some running or swimming race at Athletic Club or something wherever he, Mom and Dad go, but was upset anyway because he lost gold to a kid whose ribs were sticking out? Now my mom mentions my brother's clavicle showing... oh goodie.
I'm starting to feel grateful I kinda paid more attention than usual whenever my Health class mentioned anorexia/bulimia/eating disorders. Maybe it was because that article I read about a woman who lived years with anorexia and having a colostomy bag after having most of her intestines surgically removed scared the living heck outta me. There'd be this nasty gurgling sound as when she DID eat, the food would quickly pass from her stomach to the bag. She was scared someone would see the bag, so she sprayed the rooms with fresheners or something frightened it smelled. Later, when she was trying to fix her colostomy bag in the bathroom or something, she got stuck there for hours and hours and had to be rushed to the hospital. And you know what happened a few days later: she died.
I dunno about you--but no matter HOW much I wanted to pound my brother for being an annoying git a lot, I don't want to see him with a colostomy bag. I think that would just break my heart.
Huh. Look at that. Dad's talking to him about his weight again already.

Date: 2006-05-29 04:53 am (UTC)The best thing you can do is tell your brother he isn't fat, and make sure you pound it into his head until he understands.
There may be some other thing going on in his life that's causing this as well, you might wanna check that out if that's the cause.

Date: 2006-05-29 05:14 am (UTC)Mom and Dad also mention something anti-junk food my brother saw in class one day or something, which frightened him enough to convince him the horrors of a single potato chip or something.
The kid that got the gold instead of him, to put it bluntly from my parents, "like someone who survived Auschwitz". It's real serious too--my dad just finished talking to him, and he WAS throwing up to lose weight.

Date: 2006-05-29 05:19 am (UTC)And that's pretty scary. The whole kid who looks like he's from Auschwitz. Ugh, pretty bad how the world's comin' out to.
Anyways, I wish your family luck with getting your brother out of this jam. It won't be easy; but with a loving family, he'll get out of it. ;)

Date: 2006-05-29 05:42 am (UTC)I'm so sorry, Puri-chan...
Date: 2006-05-29 01:50 pm (UTC)I'm really happy that you guys caught it though! People don't spot it as much in boys, it's somwhat less common in them. And since you've caught it in his teenage years there's a good chance he can get treated and go onto a somwhat normal life.
Just remember to support him through all of this, and keep a close watch on him. You guys will definately want to get him professional help--eating disorders are up there with OCD, they're very hard to control.
And I'm really sorry that you have to deal with so much mental illness in your family. *hugs* It's a shame and it's gotta be so stressful. But things will work out somehow, you just gotta keep on truckin' and find ways to manage the anger. If you ever need to talk, just flip me an e-mail or IM me. I can't always be online but I check my e-mail multiple times a day. My mail is listed on my LJ profile, friends-only.
*HUG*
